Default GM invests $115 million in hybrids

I saw this yesterday, but didn't get around until posting it today. There was another article about hybrids as well, but I can't find it now. I'll allow a slight personal bias, and hope that they'll create something better than the Vue Hybrid seems.

Wow! Thanks for posting that new, bright spot in the U.S. Auto industry.

I hope their new transmissions are a completely new design, reliable CVT and not just a multiple gear traditional AT.

The transmission is the heart of the 2-Mode system that is being co-developed with DCX and BMW. The best way to describe it is that it is an Electronically Variable Transmission. It is not belt or chain driven, like a conventional CVT and does include some gear and clutch technology to allow it to constantly adjust between the two modes. Typically designed CVTs are not at the point in development where they can manage the types of loads (mass, towing and hauling) that the EVT can handle.

Peace,

Martin

Thank you martinjlm for the info on 2-mode hybrid system - it really needed to be included with the Tahoe/Yukon announcement. I was a bit hard on that omission. I'd love to find out more and figure how it compares to the HSD and IMA....
