The Once Hot Prius Falters as Gas Prices Fall

Re: The Once Hot Prius Falters as Gas Prices Fall
It brings to mind a quote from someone or other who said "reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated." Mark Twain maybe? Anyway, my HCH and its pal the Prius say that reports of their demise have been greatly exaggerated.

yes but where are you? $2.15 would be fabulous in a big city but might be rotten in a rural area.

I'm in a rural area in NY, but we are in a yellow area, about to go orange.

Earthling- thanks for the link. The map was interesting. I have to say, though, that even though it's practically too detailed to follow, going by county is still a vast oversimplification of the market. Ther breakdown by ZIP is interesting, though. On my commute, gas prices vary as much as fifteen or twenty cents, and there are changes from morning to night. The map isn't exactly a snapshot in time, either, because each piece of information was submitted at a different time. Still- this is really good stuff. I love data.
But to move squarely back on topic, gas has gone up another dime or so, which makes it about twenty cents more (for the cheapest gas along my commute) than it was when this thread was started. Once again, a friend with an SUV has been whining about it to me, while I smile inwardly. And this is why the Prius is not, in fact, in trouble.

The story sounds familiar to me and goes like this...
2004 and 2005 - Hybrids can't be a good idea. The added buyer's premium means you'll never get the additional money back in gas savings, etc.
2006 and 2007 - Hybrids can't be a good idea. There are more hybrids available because people are buying fewer of them because they don't live up to mileage claims, etc.
I can't wait to hear the reasons 2008 and 2009.
