Phew, crisis averted!

It was a bad throttle body ... Replaced under warranty.
Hillbilly Hybrid wins a huggle from me.

Thank god it wasn't as serious as it sounded.

Thanks for the help.

Eek, nothing is ever as simple as it seems.

I don't know what they did (or more likely forgot to do) when they replaced the throttle body but the tack is off by 1000rpm.

When it's on 'auto-stop' the tach reads 'engine off' and when the engine kicks in at 1000rpm it shows 'auto-stop.'

Basically the whole thing has gone down a notch.

Called them and they didn't seem too concerned ... so I'm going in tomorrow for them to rectify this. I'm guessing it's a BCM reset issue or a similarly simple fix.

That's odd. There is a "learn" procedure that new throttle bodies are supposed to go through.

Is this something the service/mechanics have to manually do or is it supposed to be automatic?

What a strange machine ...

Just drove to run an errand and the tach is back to working as it should.

I guess it's a slow learner.

I am hoping this is the end of the matter.

Cheers!

so i guess the throttle body needs cleaning every 25k? is it in the manual for regular maintenance?

I'm not sure but I don't think it needed cleaning, and I'm pretty sure it's not part of regular maintenance. According to the dealer it was just a bad part that failed and was replaced under warranty.

it is not in the service manual that the throttle body needs servicing every 25k miles. but my local caddy dealer maybe knows something I don't that they advice me having the throttle body service done everytime I go for an oil change.
