Honda Civic 2011 Battery Cooling fan
 

Hi all,

I have a 2011 Honda Civic Hybrid and yesterday while driving all of a sudden all the indicator lights on the dashboard came on and the light next to the D drive mode started blinking. Checking with the OBD2 sensor I got u0110 and u1205 and because of some timing issue I had to take it to the Honda dealer nearby. I got to know from the dealer that they initially thought that some fuse (I think it's fuse #61 10A by googling) was damaged but then they replaced that and found that the code was still there and now they think that the fan for cooling the hybrid system has gone bad. The dealership quoted $900 to fix it and when I called a few local mechanics stating the problem they said it's something the dealership can fix. I am not sure if I just ran into a bunch of mechanics who don't know what they are talking about or is it really a dealer-only fix.

Could folks who are experienced with hybrids please suggest how to deal with this?

Same fan on all 06-11 HCH2.

Before doing anything, I would get ALL codes and post here AND make 100% certain your 12V battery and the (-) cable as well as the ground straps to the engine/CVT are good.

Most shops stay away from hybrids because they're hybrids.

U0110 and U1205 concurrently are generally associated with a failed MCM.

I doubt anything is going on with the FAN. The U0110 is an F-CAN malfunction, and I suspect someone is reading it incorrectly.

This is what the dash looks like. The 3 codes are: U0110: Lost communication with Drive Motor Controller Module A U1205: DTC definition not found. Please refer to vehicle service manual and the third code is also U1205.

Dash lights tell little.

With that 12V light on, the car will die on you if it stays on. You're not charging the 12V, and it will deplete, and you will be stranded. If it turns off when you're at 2000 rpm, you'll probably be fine.

Those are the codes reported by Honda Diagnostic System (HDS), or those are the codes reported by your reader? If they are from your reader, they may be incomplete.

Again, those codes together are likely a failed MCM. It's also possible you have a break in one of the connections, but those are very rare.

Sorry for my naivety but what's a failed MCM. What does MCM stand for? Is this something that might be covered under the battery warranty?

Motor Control Module. One of the many computers in the car - essentially, the main "hybrid" computer.

Thanks. Is this an expensive part to repair or replace? Any chance the battery warranty might cover this?

Yes (new) or no (salvage yard/ebay). Probably not, but it's worth asking.

But I guess I'm at the mercy of the dealership unless I can find a mechanic ready to work on the car. $900 is going to sting. Many thanks for the pointers and your reply.
