2006 Civic Hybrid IMA+CEL light permanently on

Hi,
I have an 06 Civic Hybrid that sat for along time that I've got running again, the hybrid battery kept draining fast and re-calibrating on its own & then the IMA+CEL+Battery lights came on permanently (even disconnecting the 12v for 5min won't reset it) and i lost the assistance of the hybrid system (almost zero power).

I get code p1570. Obviously the hybrid battery is bad. I'm ordering a new one & my question is, after i put it in is the computer going to know & reset itself? Because, as I've said even disconnecting/reconnecting the 12v battery doesn't force it to reset & recheck anymore.

Is there some other reset procedure? I'm worried that even after putting new hybrid battery in its not even gonna see that its there and start using it..

Thanks for any info

P1570 is due to individual module voltage problem. This is value is inspected and evaluated immediately, so if it's present, it will immediately trigger a IMA/CEL.

Simply disconnect the 12V battery for several minutes while replacing the IMA battery and reconnect when installed.

Allow the car to idle for several minutes or until the charge/discharge portion of the battery gauge stops charging before driving.

Thanks for the reply S Keith.

So i can expect that code/IMA+CEL+Battery lights to clear on its own once the new Hybrid Battery is in? Or do i have to clear it with a scan tool?

Disconnecting the 12V wil clear it.

Yo S. Keith,
Thanks for the info... you were spot on... Installed new battery & everything is working normally again..

Secondary question tho, i only get like 30-35 MPG and the hybrid system doesn't seem to be using the battery correctly...
Seems to be re-calibrating itself often.
Seems like it always isn't auto-stopping at stop lights.
Seems to only lightly assist on start outs up to 3k rpm/25mph & then stops assisting.
Seems to not recharge when coasting downhill or braking, but will instead decide to randomly start recharging itself while climbing a hill.

I've heard that this because of a software update Honda rolled out to them to make the hybrid batteries last longer... Is there a way of undoing this? i'd rather have the be better MPG, and look after the health of the battery myself...

thoughts? thanks bro...

Re: 2006 Civic Hybrid IMA+CEL light permanently on

Your descriptions are indicative of an under-performing or failing battery. Recalibrations are 10,000% due to imbalanced cells (one or more of the 11 tap voltages go out of spec during discharge or charge), and that shouldn't happen on a "new" battery of good quality.

If you're using your heater, the ICE is the only source of heat, so this may force the ICE to run rather than engage auto-stop.

The patch makes the car MORE tolerant of failing batteries. It does not affect the operation of healthy batteries.

IMHO, your "new" battery is of low quality based on the symptoms you describe.

It was not a "New" battery, but a "remanufactured one". (pretty sure its internals look new tho)

They could be out of balance but i grid charged it before using it...

you think i should all the way drain+grid charge cycle it a couple times?

I did get the 12-month warranty on it so I can exchange it for a diff one if need be...

I used quotes - "new" as you described it as new, but I didn't actually believe it was brand new. Furthermore, the only options for truly new are the dealership OR Chinese "D" cells, which are garbage.

Simple cleaning of the sticks or $10 worth of PVC shrink is all that's needed to make them look new.

"Remanufactured" could actually be remanufactured Chinese "D" cells, which are almost as good as cells sitting in a pile and set on fire. They could have mixed/matched cell manufacturers too.

If you grid charged it properly, that is further evidence that the "replacement" battery is crap.

Shiz, Alright, i'll keep an eye on it, try a few things and get back to ya....

Yo SKeith,
I've got a 4-day weekend to try as many discharge/recharge cycles as i can with it. I've got it hooked up to two 75 watt light bulbs at the moment. And i was wondering a couple things...

If it takes over 24 hours for the battery to drain dead thru two 75w light bulbs how can the computer think there is anything wrong with this battery? How can the gauge in dash ever think that it's dead? Thats gotta be F'd up software right?

How much time on the maxxvolts grid charger do you think is enough to be full? I left one on too long once i think, and it tripped off an IMA/CEL i think from overheating (dont wanna do that again).

Also, what state of charge do you think i should leave it at on the final charge up (voltage indicated on the MaxxVolts charger)?
