Ahh .. Summer MPG
 

No more freezing mornings, afternoons in the 60's here in NM.
The Prius, now with 7K miles through the winter has responded like many have promised. My current tank is at 58 MPG after 250 miles -- and I am now consistently in the 60's driving around town after the car has warmed up. I think there is a chance of hitting my first 600 mile tank. We'll see.

I'm ready for warmer temps also. When it's cold, I just can NOT get even into the 40's in stop-and-go traffic. It averages about 10 MPG less than when it's warm outside.

I await my better mileage, too. Admittedly, I just checked my tire pressure yesterday and it slipped down to 31 PSI! I pushed it back up to about 41/39... that's likely got more to do with my stinking 38 MPG than the weather, haha. Within 30 miles my tank mileage (starting at about 120 miles) went from 37.7 to almost 40.

___Although our weather in Chicago is still below freezing by some margin (we had ~ ½” of snow at my house last night), I saw some nice moves over the last tank by some members with warmer temperatures. Sdctcher in his Escape HEV finally hit a nice 37 + mpg tank and the temps can only help him climb into the low 40’s later on next month hopefully.

___Now check those pressures and let us see the averages soar! I would like to add some more hypermilers as we have had a long winter dry spell …

Can someone give an idea what the difference is between winter and summer temperatures? I got about 39 in my HCH this winter in chicago any idea how much of an increase I'll get when we get above 40 on a regular basis?

BTW, what should my winter goal be? Am I close to what other cold weather people get or am I still falling short?

If you'd like to do some quick research, look in the mileage database for a few Civic Hybrids that reside in places with variable climates. On the line graph you should see the increase and decrease in mileage with the months, and if you select the temperature graph, you can directly compare.

DUH. I'm an idiot. Such a simple solution. I have to start looking at the milage database as a tool instead of a highscore table.

Haha, don't worry about it. Once I add all the interactive features to the site (working on the articles section now... then comes the red section), I'll be able to improve site usability a bit to really show everyone what a great resource we have here.

Yeah, there's definitely regional differences. Here in Phoenix we just hit 88 degrees yesterday. I made a 200 mile roadtrip going for max mileage, and even with leaving at 10am, it was hot enough by 12 that I had to intermittantly use my A/C. I assume probably the only place you'd see the same mileage year-round would be with someone who's sum total of driving is along coastal California or something where it's hardly ever below 50 and rarely above 80.

Speaking of the heat in Phoenix.....

I just got my windows tinted in my Civic. It is a ceramic based tint that is supposed to block 98% of the rays and reduce heat inside the car. I had to use the A/C today (since the windows are tinted) and did not notice a decline in MPG - so it will be interesting.

I think summer is here early.
